Real wood doors are genuinely beautiful and they are the reason a lot of Eagle houses look the way they do. They are also the highest maintenance door you can own in this climate. Idaho summers are dry and bright, winters run through repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and the combination is hard on a finish. A wood door on a south or west elevation typically wants refinishing every three to five years; neglect that and water gets into the joints, the panels swell and check, and the repair stops being cosmetic.
Wood is also heavy, which means the springs are working harder than on a steel door of the same size. When a wood door starts feeling sluggish, the springs are usually the reason and they need sizing to the real weight — not to a chart.
Three and four-bay garages are common here, which means several independent door systems of different widths and weights, sometimes with openers installed years apart. We service them together on one visit as a matter of course. And on the properties closer to the foothills, wind exposure is a real design factor: a wide, unreinforced door on an exposed elevation flexes in a gust, and that flex is what creases a top section and pops rollers out of the track. Adding struts to a wide door is inexpensive and it is the single most effective thing you can do about it.
